Metro Toronto Convention Centre

MTCCC.com Rebuild

UI Design

Last built in 2004, MTCCC.com was not representative of the unique, modern, first-class city that the Metro Convention Centre is located within.  In 2016, I had the opportunity to lead the UI design and create a brand new digital online identity for the iconic downtown Toronto building.

The brief was seemingly simple: create a modern website that helps convention planners select not only the MTCC, but the city of Toronto as the host of their event.  Competing against cities such as Berlin, Vancouver, or Sydney came with its challenges.

One of the biggest was the sheer size of the site.  The MTCC is 600,000 square feet and have 66 rooms and 2 massive halls.  Just like the space itself, their old website was huge and almost impossible to navigate.  The solution was to whittle down the content to focus on three types of users (Planners, Exhibitors, and Attendees).  Each user had unique flows to find the information they needed so we gave them the ability to enter the flow that only pertains to them.

Major features:

Fully responsive, modular design system: Flexibility was very important for the client.  With a hundred of events a year of all types, the MTCC needed the ability to constantly change information within their CMS while maintaining consistency throughout the experience.  Understanding that many users would be travelling not only to the space, but into the city, every page within the flow was also fully responsive for all devices.

Accessibility: Owned by a crown corporation, accessibility and compliance with AODA guidelines was a requirement of the design.
